Music gives me life.
Is this a music site? I thought this was about Transformational Consulting? Well you are in the right place. While the company is curating, I wanted to share something.
I get my inspo from the most popular poets of my generation, songwriters. These are a few songs that communicate the human experience and convey some of the themes of my work in a way that makes the abstract concepts more concrete.
And in more personal terms, it makes me less lonely. These songs talk about how I feel, and then I think, "well it must not just be me if somebody wrote a song about it”.
Once in a Lifetime
Talking Heads
If you never thought “how did I get here”", you are probably under 20. We all have those moments where we say, “how can they trust me with all this responsibility?”, “how did I become my dad?”. Our experience, the human experience, may seem specific but as we work with people we see that we are all the “same kind of different” which is why a song like this can make sense to millions of people. And as you say, I don't have enough time, remember, time isn’t after us.
Reincarnated
Kendrick Lamar
The line that gets me is about how do you expect others to reconcile when you have no forgiveness in your heart. Our work teaches that if you can see your part in any situation and own it, your opportunity to impact the other person’s heart multiplies. And while you cannot forgive, they cannot either.
Ballad of a Dying Man
Father John Misty
Here is the challenge. You hear this song and think of the Trump supporter or the liberal, depending on your belief, who just won’t listen. But imagine just if you can, the song is about you. You have been alive and available to straighten everyone out about everything. But one day, who will do it? And then in no time at all, this will be the distant past.
Time
Pink Floyd
It is the ultimate stoner song, but the message is universal. Have you noticed the years are going faster? But the notion that your life ends up as half a page of scribbled lines is a narrative that is up to you.
I Am Not Okay
Jelly Roll
You may not be holding on for dear life like the singer, but his message "its all gonna be alright" is straight up Marcus Aurelius. The magic to me of this song is getting that most people "have learned to hide it well" and we all have some version of not being ok. So let’s take care of each other people!
Human Touch
Bruce Springsteen
First, how do you pick one Springsteen song? Mainly I share this for the one line, So you've been broken and you've been hurt. Show me somebody who ain't. He is talking about love but it applies to work as well. We have to take a risk to trust, or you miss out on the relationship you could have.
